IR TV Review: LUCKY - EPISODE 4 [Apple TV]
The one thing about crime capers is not being afraid to make some drastic story and character choices as long as one knows where it mjght take the story. "Lucky" so far has been good about not letting the audience assume too much about what character will actually do or what story details might be important. Lucky makes a choice at the end of Episode 3 simply because it is human nature. She can’t understand certain things but also is blindsided to others. Drew Starkey as her husband Cary earns more points her since there is contextnow. He has the air of a Chris Evans in certain ways and there is more chemistry here than before though the chase that takes up the later half of this episode changes the dynamics.
It is a cool chase through the streets of San Diego but with Joy’s experience on "Furiosa", it would have been nicer to see some wider shots of her driving. The thing is every episode ends with a cool set piece that leaves the viewer wanting more which is the sign of a good show (even a closed ended one). Bening’s Priscilla like all the characters in the show are inherently flawed but the reflection she allows the character to show and then an ignorance really makes her path human especially in the final moments of this episode. She may not like Lucky and Lucky may have done things. But even if Lucky is a loser everyone in this series is doing something to protect mostly themselves (but in a small way others). That shows some path towards redemption but it tends to go horribly wrong which is why these kind of train wreck character pieces can be so fun to watch. B
