IR TV Review: LUCKY - EPISODE 7 (“All Good Things”) [Apple TV]

The intention at the end of the previous episode of "Lucky" was to create a sense of dread but also to see if Lucky could be ahead of the demons she is battling, stuck between her nature, her remorse of Cary but also her father’s influence. She is always working an angle and going up against Whittaker (William Fichtner) direct, especially with Priscilla watching requires gumption and courage. Priscilla, as played by Annette Bening, seems to know what she is capable but Lucky also knows the ace of spades against her: the connection of Cary to Whittaker and the breakdown of it. Rand, on the other side, is battling her own demons but as we saw in the exchange between her and John (Timothy Olyphant), the job becomes more important than the kids. Whittaker hedges his bet on this.

The climax location is beautiful in its own way and one in the LaCienega basin that few see unless they have lived there. It is a great set piece reminiscent of "To Live And Die In LA" which obviously an homage point in this series. The double play works and its use is well built but the character motivation behind it on one side falls short. The resolution and meaning is actually well played but leaves open a lot of loose ends. Again this series angles it just right for one season but leaves its options open. The epilogue really brings the point home and one believes it might be real but a wolf is always a wolf through sometimes it’s nature can be controlled (but just barely). 86%/B+
