IR TV Review: A KNIGHT OF THE SEVEN KINGDOMS - EPISODE 3 [HBO]
With Episode 3 of "A Knight Of The Seven Kingdoms", the intentions of Egg become a bit clearer but his reasons do not. He seems to have a way (almost magical) with animals (as shown in the horse training sequence at the beginning). There is a chicanery like Pan but still some underlying pain or loneliness that permeates him. Egg sees something in Sir Dunk but it might be just a form of understanding and empathy...but not pity. He speaks at one point that he is happy looking over the town and would be interesting to stay Dunk's squire just to have that feeling. Dexter Sol Ansell as Egg is quite good because he almost runs circles around Peter Caffrey as Dunk but that is almost on purpose.
Like Rosencrantz & Guildenstern, what sells this show is again the banter between Egg and Dunk since Egg seems to know better but Dunk trusts him while also trying to be stern like his knight mentor used to be to him. However the wild card in play is one of the Princes who is competing in the games. His tactics are a bit underhanded and sadistic and yet it comes through in certain ways because of his lineage. It comes to a head in the latter half of the episode which makes total sense because the who point of Dunk tends to reflect in certain things that are right in front of his face. One great foreboding element does happen with a psychic and the show takes just the right tone to work with it. Tendencies will tend to shift after this but "Knight" is about maybe hiding from destiny while still understanding what it took to get you there. B
