After establishing the context of the Super Mario Brothers universe, the second entry in the franchise "The Super Mario Galaxy Movie" is a lot more cohesive, effective and linear in what it shows since the boundaries (as they were) are now actually set. The progression and thematics are also more specifically based as is the tone. But the second entry, specifically with the story of Bowser and his son, gives it a little more grounded stakes. And yet the best parts of the movie are Yoshi and Star Fox.

The aspect of a video game adaption comes down to just what a film wants to do. If it is just entertainment with some semblance of sarcastic character structure thrown in, it can do well. "Super Mario Bros Movie" knew what it was but it was a series of sequences. "Borderlands" wanted to be something grand but seriously lost track of itself. "Minecraft" involves something in between. But they all share one thing: Jack Black.

With nostalgia the basis always begins with where the idea of the connection began. An interesting illustration of the Super Mario craze is that it stretches over generations which is both good and bad because there are many different interpretations. This partly explains why "The Super Mario Brothers Movie" is all over the place.
