The Minions can function within any time period as long as they serve the Big Boss. What "Minions & Monsters" does is still play to that concept while still paying a heavy tribute to early film history. While the first 1/3 builds up the mythology, the 2nd 1/3 is interesting in that it tells a creative original story about the Minions in Hollywood. The story does get very meta in the end (and in retrospect...the beginning as well) but it is a love letter from the Paris based Illumination back to the beginnings of Hollywood.

Writer/Director Luc Besson, with his take on the horror romance of “Dracula” with Caleb Landry Jones (who starred in his previous "Dogman"), has definitely an interesting play that is both similar and yet different from Gary Oldman and Francis Ford Coppola. It does change certain key elements and takes away certain character but doesn't suffer for it.

The aspect of "Frankenstein" is that it is always integrated with the point that these two characters: Victor and the Monster will always be linked. Writer/Director Guillermo Del Toro brings a slightly different energy to the proceedings but one cannot help but see certain extrapolations and tendencies with comparison to Kenneth Branagh's "Frankenstein" back in the mid-1990s .The motivations here are more realistic but almost less gothic in certain ways.
